Warrego Highway Transport Planning

Department of Transport & Main Roads
Plainlands, Helidon and Withcott, Queensland, Australia

This study investigated how the road network at Plainlands, Helidon and Withcott could be developed to support the intended transport function of the Warrego Highway and serve the transport needs of these townships. The outputs for the study helped inform the planning schemes for the Lockyer Valley Regional Council and will also be incorporated in the over-arching Needs Assessment and Feasibility Study (NAFS) for the Warrego Highway between Marburg and Withcott, undertaken by the TMR's Core Technology Services.

HDR's role included a desktop review of previous planning on the highway and a traffic generation overview considering the potential future land use to develop planning considerations for the road network. Preliminary engineering designs were developed to support the long term (30 years) planning horizons.

Particular challenges included developing strategies for the highway and local road network which still integrated the existing townships by providing cross highway connectivity whilst removing access (both property and at-grade intersections) off the highway and facilitating future development needs.

The study also investigated interim engineering solutions to bridge the gap between the existing situation and the ultimate planning vision in areas were the existing scenarios were unsafe and non-compliant to current standards.
